Perryville and St. Vincent played their annual Hope Game at the Perry Park Center on October 13. The Pirates won in four sets.

“A little slow pace for us today, but it is homecoming week, so I’ll take the win,” Perryville coach Liz Meyr said. “I’m proud of my girls. They’re breaking lots of records. With all the seniors who have been on varsity for four seasons, I’m glad that all their hard work is finally coming together.”

Perryville senior Lexi Schemel set a new school record for career digs, with 974. The record had previously been held by Ana Moll who had 943 from 2021-2023.

It feels really good, especially at a game like this, because it’s our Crosstown rivals,” Schemel said.

Lexi achieved the new record with 18 digs in the match. Kaeli Klaus led the team in kills with 13. Paige Berkbigler led the team serving, making 22 serves with 3 aces, she had 21 digs in the match as well.

The Indians were led in kills by Sophie Verseman, who had 15. Sydney Meyer led in serving, with 4 aces. Emery Amschler led the team in digs, with 11.

“We kind of started off slow on serve-receive and it seemed to be a serve-receive game,” St. Vincent coach Sue Verseman said. “I think when we were up, they weren’t receiving well, and when we were down, and I think a lot of it came down to that. We did have some other hitters step up tonight. It was just a tough night all around, but the girls kept fighting every time. We were pretty proud of them because they scrapped every single point, we just came up short. We’re going to have to get that first ball to our setter and give us some options on hitting to beat these bigger teams.”

The Pirates and Indians both had one more regular season game following the Hope game. The pirates lost in 3 sets to Festus to finish the year 20-6-3. The Indians lost in four sets to Oak Ridge to finish the season 6-14-1.

Both teams will be competing in the class 3 district 2 tournament, which begins October 20. Full seeding and opponents have yet to be determined as of press time. Results will follow in next week’s edition.
