Indians improve to 7-1 in blowout win

HILLSBORO – St. Vincent improved to 7-1 on the football field with a 49-18 victory over Grandview.

The game remained close throughout the first half, with the Indians taking the lead into halftime, but only leading 29-12. The Indians were able to pull away late, scoring twice in the third quarter and once more in the fourth quarter, while holding the Eagles to just one more touchdown with the JV squad playing the final quarter for St. Vincent.

“I felt like we came out and executed well offensively,” St. Vincent head coach Tim Schumer said. “Defensively, they made a couple of plays on us in the first half and we got the score at 29 to 12 at halftime. And then we came in the second half, got the ball first, drove right down, scored, then got a pick six from Trence Unterreiner that kind of broke the game wide open for us so we started subbing and had our JV in there for all of the fourth quarter and they scored their last touchdown with about 18 seconds remaining in the game.”

The game was yet another blowout for the Indian’s offense. St. Vincent has now scored 30 or more in 6 of their 8 games. The only game in which the Indians were held to under 14 points was the week 5 loss to Valle Catholic, the only Indians loss of the season thus far.

One final game remains for St. Vincent in the regular season, a road trip to Festus to take on Jefferson. The 7-1 Indians will meet the Blue Jays, who are currently 5-2 but undefeated in conference play, in a game that will have big implications on playoff seeding.

“We have always been in the situation ever since ive been coaching where Jefferson is a very quality opponent,” Schumer said. “For the last three or four years the outcome of this game has kind of determined the rankings in the conference. Most of this year we knew this would end up being the conference championship because both of us are undefeated. So it’s a good game, you want to end your season on a high note going into the playoffs.”

Schumer said a win against Jefferson could give the Indians a big boost of momentum heading into the post season.

“Hopefully you can have some success and springboard that into a district run,” he said. “Like I said at the beginning of the year our first goal is always a conference championship so we have our chance to do that this week so we need to take full advantage of that.”

Kickoff against the Blue Jays is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.
