The Perryville Lady Pirates kept their winning streak going on the volleyball court Monday night, beating Jefferson in three sets.
The Pirates took a tight set one 26-24, and then followed with sets of 25-19 and 25-22 to win their seventh consecutive match, a streak that goes back to Sept 12.
Coach Liz Meyer identified senior Emma Blechle and sophomore Kaeli Klaus as standouts in the match. Blechle had 11 kills in the match, Klaus had 9, along with 4 aces and 18 digs.
Meyer said Paige Birkbigler and Charlie Gerler were standouts as well, the duo combined for 27 assists.
The Pirate team has been able to put a winning streak together despite not being fully healthy. The win over Jefferson was the first game back for Klaus and Berkbigler after both suffered minor injuries in the Dig For Life Tournament earlier this month.
Meyer said with the team back to full strength, they have the potential to make a deep playoff run, but work still needs to be done to be ready.
“We don’t take any day for granted and we know there’s a lot of tough teams out there that we haven’t seen yet,” Meyer said. “We’re working day by day to make sure that when the end of the season comes, we have what it takes to make a good run in the district tournament. Potosi is right now according to Max Preps number one in class three, and they’re in our district. So we know we have a lot of work to do, but we’re staying focused and taking it one day out of time.”
During the win streak, Emma Blechle reached 100 career aces, Paige Birkbigler is currently 5 away from reaching the same milestone.
Four regular season games remain for the Lady Pirates before they host the Perryville Tournament on Oct. 3.
