The St. Vincent Indians improved to 4-0 on the gridiron with a Friday night home win over Herculaneum. The Indians controlled the game from the start, winning 42-7.
The Indians offensive attack came mostly through the air Friday. Senior Quarterback Andrew Schumer threw for 185 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Seniors Adam Brickhaus and Quinton Doza caught two touchdown passes each, with Brickhaus leading overall in the win with 126 yards.
Sophomore quarterback Hunter Mattingly saw playing time as well, completing a late touchdown pass to senior Carter Herman.
Layton Cheaney led the way on the ground with 49 yards. Quinton Whistler scored the Indian’s loan rushing touchdown on a one-yard run.
“It was a very good win for us,” head coach Tim Schumer said. “We got started early, kind of similar to our last three games, we came out on defense, got a stop, and then came down on offense and put points on the board right away and just kind of kept the ball rolling. The defense played really well all night and ended up forcing four turnovers, one interception, three fumble recoveries. They kind of gave our offense some short fields to capitalize on. It was a good team win overall, both offensively and defensively.”
Now at 4-0 and approaching the halfway point of the season, the Indians are starting to feel like they are ready for the tough competition that will come in the playoffs, their next game will be a test against one of the tougher teams on the schedule, Valle Catholic, who will also be coming into this Friday night with a 4-0 record.
“We have Valley next and they’re one of the perennial powers of the Missouri high school football scene in this area,” Schumer said. “We know it’s going to be a tough test but it’s a good measuring stick for us because they’re going there at the end of the season as well come district time and beyond, so we are looking forward to it. It’s an exciting game. Both teams are undefeated so it should be a good overall game for both teams.”
Kickoff in Ste. Genevieve is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday night.
