Mineral Area College has announced that James Whaley, an automotive technology instructor, has achieved the prestigious designation of ASE World Class Technician.

The honor, awarded by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence and the Auto Care Association, recognizes Whaley as one of the most highly skilled automotive professionals in the industry.

Earning the World Class Technician designation requires completing and maintaining 22 specific ASE certifications. The rigorous testing spans a wide range of specialties, including automotive systems, collision repair, medium- and heavy-duty trucks, and advanced engine performance.

Whaley’s achievement is rare. While approximately 250,000 technicians hold ASE certifications, only about 2,000 have earned World Class recognition since the program began more than 35 years ago. Typically, fewer than 50 technicians reach the designation each year.

“James’s achievement brings an incredible level of distinction to our MAC Tech Automotive Technology program,” said MAC President Dr. Joe Gilgour. “By reaching a milestone that only a handful of technicians achieve each year, he is demonstrating to our students that there is no limit to professional growth in the automotive trades.”
