Valle Catholic shuts out SV at home

St. Vincent coach Tim Schumer talked about using the game against Valle Catholic as a measuring stick.
As the Indians found out, they still have a way to go before they are on the level of the Warriors. Valle Catholic overcame a fired-up Indians squad to start the game and continued its dominance over St. Vincent by handing them a 54-0 defeat on Friday night.
According to the state website, Valle holds a 17-game winning streak against St. Vincent.
The Indians looked early on in the game as if this time would be different.
St. Vincent stopped Valle Catholic on their first drive and forced a turnover on downs. Schumer liked the attitude of his team at that point.
“The guys and the fans were into the game,” he said. “We did a lot of good things on that drive on defense as we were flying around and made it really tough on them at times to do things. However, we weren’t able to sustain that for a full four quarters and then they kind of showed the machine that they are.”
From that moment on the game was mostly all Warriors. The Indians went three and out on their first offensive possession and then Valle turned the switch on the game. The contest flipped on its head when Valle took a screen pass 44 yards for a score and the next offensive play for the Indians was a fumble returned for a touchdown. Valle led 14-0 in the blink of an eye with 3:17 left in the first quarter.

“Those two plays zapped us a little bit,” Schumer said. “You could see the attitude of our kids go from excited to ‘here we go again.’”
The Indians couldn’t stop Valle after that as quarterback Grant Fallert followed blockers down the field and went in for a 41-yard score to make it 21-0. Fallert had over 100 yards rushing in the game. Valle also forced an interception in the first half that was returned for a touchdown. And recovered a fumble that turned into a touchdown a couple of plays later.
Valle led 41-0 at the half as Isaac Balser broke a couple of tackles on fourth and 20 to score with 22 seconds left.
Schumer saw some positives throughout the game despite the one-sided loss.
“We did some things well,” he said. “We made it difficult for them on both sides of the ball, where we put three or four plays together, but then we had a miscue with a tackle or a missed block and they took advantage of it.”
St. Vincent will look to rebound on Friday against Bayless. The Brochos lost 70-14 to Jefferson in week five.
“We just have to make sure we go out and execute and worry about what we are doing,” Schumer said. “If we do that we should be fine.”
