“This is an alternative method to qualifying to become a substitute teacher for those who do not have 60 college credit hours,” said Jane Narrow, the chief academic officer at District 32. “These courses usually cost hundreds of dollars to attend, so we’re thrilled to be able to offer it locally at no cost.”
Minimum qualifications to enroll in the training course include having a high school diploma or equivalent, being 18 years or older to sub in a K-8 building, or 20 years or older to sub in a 9-12 building.
“This course is offered in conjunction with Mineral Area College and will feature local instructors from various educational backgrounds,” Narrow said. “It will provide you the information and skills you need to be a successful substitute teacher.”
At District 32, substitute teachers earn $100 per day, with long-term subbing opportunities that can offer a higher wage.
Candidates will be required to complete a background check and separate registration within the DESE portal, which will also be covered for those who successfully complete the training.
