R-M Staff Missouri officials reminded residents last week to prepare for the season’s first blasts of snow, ice and cold during the state’s annual Winter Weather Preparedness Week, held Nov. 3–7.
The event, coordinated by the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Weather Service (NWS), encouraged Missourians to review safety plans, stock emergency kits and stay informed about changing weather conditions.
“Winter weather can strike quickly, and preparation is key to keeping families safe,” said SEMA Director Jim Remillard in a statement. “Missourians should take time now to check their vehicles, heating systems, and supplies before severe conditions arrive.”
The National Weather Service emphasized that winter storms are among Missouri’s most dangerous weather events, citing the risks of frostbite, hypothermia, and traffic crashes caused by icy roads. Officials urged drivers to slow down, carry blankets and extra food in vehicles, and check road conditions through MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map before setting out.
As part of last week’s observance, agencies shared educational materials on social media and reminded schools and local governments to update emergency procedures.
MoDOT also used the week to highlight its fleet of more than 1,500 snowplows and 2,400 trained drivers, who will be ready when winter weather returns.
