CAPE GIRARDEAU — Southeast Missouri State University senior Sophie Martin of Perryville has been named the university’s 2025 Woman of the Year, earning one of SEMO’s top Homecoming honors for her leadership, scholarship, and service to the campus community.

Martin, a psychology major sponsored by the Student Government Association, currently serves as SGA president and is active in residence life, Greek life, and the university’s Honors Program. Known among classmates for her energy and compassion, Martin said she’s proud to represent both her university and her hometown.

“Homecoming is about more than a parade and games,” she said. “It brings alumni, students, and the community together to celebrate our pride in SEMO.”

The Woman of the Year and Man of the Year awards were announced during halftime of the Oct. 18 Homecoming football game in Cape Girardeau. This year’s Man of the Year honoree is Nathan Anderson of Festus, a double major in music and musical theatre, sponsored by the SEMO Marching Band.

Martin was one of five female finalists recognized for the distinction, including another Perryville native, Maddie Robinson, who was sponsored by Iota Chi. Robinson, also a senior, has demonstrated a strong commitment to service — including a faculty-led mission trip to Belize, where she helped provide medical supplies and assistance to underserved communities.

Other Woman of the Year finalists were Lainey Canning, Sarah Chapman, and Sophia Ruffatto. The male finalists were Grant Breece, Romell Johnson, Logan Pruitt, and Drew Roth.

The annual awards honor seniors who exemplify academic excellence, campus leadership, and community involvement, and remain one of SEMO’s proudest Homecoming traditions.
