Perryville football struggles against St. Pius Lancers

To say the Perryville Pirates had a letdown, may be an understatement.
The Pirates struggled in nearly every facet of the game and fell to St. Pius 51-0 on Friday.
“We didn’t play well,” Perryville coach Brent Roth said. “They took it to us and played more physical than us. I think we played hard, we just didn’t play physical enough.”
The numbers bare that sentiment from the Perryville coach as the Pirates gained just 32 yards of total offense, compared to 340 yards for the visting Lancers.
The Pirates completed four passes for 18 yards and had 14 yards rushing on 16 carries.
Justin Lehn led the way for the Lancers with 148 yards on 26 carries.

“St. Pius probably played its best game of the year and we played our worst game of the year. We couldn’t do anything right.I don’t think we had a first down in the game.”
St. Pius scored on a safety, a blocked punt returned for a touchdown, and Perryville threw an interception on the first play from scrimmage, giving St. Pius the ball inside the 10 yard line.
“It was very frusrating,” Roth said.
Perryville (4-5) is the three seed in the Class 4, District 1 Tournament and will face off with Sikeston (1-8) at Pirate Stadium at 7 p.m.
Roth said his team has to put the game behind them and focus on the task at hand.
“On paper everyone is going to see that Sikeston is 1-8 and think that this is a game that we should handle easily. Sikeston has played a very tough schedule and part of the reason they are not the last seed in this district with only one win. I see this as an evenly matched game. I challenged our team to be more physical this week and if we are I think we have a good chance of winning. If we aren’t then we will probably go home.”
