Local leaders, legislators and community members came together Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Catalyst Center for Business in Perryville to discuss child care challenges and potential solutions impacting families and employers in the Perry County region.

The event was hosted by the Perry County Economic Development Authority in partnership with Kids Win Missouri, a statewide child advocacy organization dedicated to improving policies that support children and families.

The discussion underscored the vital role of child care in strengthening local economies, supporting working parents and ensuring young children have a strong start. Participants examined the current child care landscape in southeast Missouri, including workforce shortages, affordability barriers and the need for sustainable solutions that meet both family and business needs.

“Access to reliable, high-quality child care is not just a family issue — it’s an economic development issue,” said Crystal Jones, executive director of the Perry County Economic Development Authority. “When families can find and afford care, local employers are better able to attract and retain workers, and our entire community benefits.”

Kids Win Missouri shared statewide perspectives and highlighted collaborative efforts across the state to strengthen early care and education through policy solutions and local partnerships.

“We’re grateful to Representative Bryant Wolfin and Senator Jamie Burger for taking the time to attend and actively listen to the needs of this community,” said Robyn Schelp, director of policy and advocacy for Kids Win Missouri. “When state leaders hear directly from local partners and families, it helps shape better policy solutions that ensure Missouri children and families can thrive.”

The event concluded with a call to continue community dialogue and partnerships to advance innovative approaches that ensure all families in Perry County have access to the child care they need to succeed.
