Local soccer teams earn All-State recognition

The Saxony Lutheran girls soccer earned third place in Class 1, so it makes sense that they should be recognized for that achievement.
They did exactly that.
The Crusaders had five players named to the Class 1 All-state team when the honors were recently announced.
“It’s really good to get that recognition from coaches around the state of the quality of players we had,” Saxony Lutheran coach Chris Crawford said. “We probably had four or five that were left off the list that were just as deserving.”
Maci Hollis and Camille Richey were named to the first team, while Annie Adams was named to the second team. Grace Ozark and Anna Mueller were honorable mentions.
Hollis was a critical part of a Saxony Lutheran defense that allowed two goals during the victories in the Class 1 postseason. Hollis also added one goal and one assist.
“Maci took a big step forward for us and is a big time defender. She started our attack from the back,” Crawford said.”
Richey was an integral part of the midfield attack for the Crusaders. She led the team with 12 goals and also dished out seven assists.
“Camille is a dynamic player,” Crawford said. “She’s a pest to play against because her motor never stops,” Crawford said. “She’s someone we can count on to perform game in and game out.”
Adams led the team with 10 assists and scored nine goals as well.
“We had her playing more of a defensive position,” Crawford said. “But because of her ability we decided to move her up the field and she started scoring more goals. That really was the difference in our success in the middle of the season.”
Ozark recorded three shutouts as the primary goalkeeper this season for the Crusaders. She recorded 90 saves.
“Grace was solid for us all year,” Crawford said. “She deserved the recognition because she stepped up her game.”
Anna Mueller ended her Saxony career and a vital part of the leadership on the team being a three year captain.
“She would probably be the first to tell you that she was not the best player when she started, but she worked hard to get where she was,” Crawford said.
Crusaders went 13-9 this season.
“it’s awesome to be back in the conversation and I think we will be able to build off the success of this season,” Crawford said.”

The St. Vincent soccer program is probably ahead of schedule, after fielding a young squad. That includes earning several top honors.
Lana Adams and Cailyn Prost were named Class 3 second team All-State recently.
The Indians went 16-5 this season and advanced to the Class 3 Quarterfinals before falling to Ursuline Academy
Adams led the team with video game numbers with 32 goals and 27 assists.

“I think we set up about 90 percent of our offense,” St. Vincent coach Todd Strattman said. “She sees the field so well, with who is open and where the ball needs to go. I think she has a great chance to be right back there next here.”
While Adams set up the offense, Prost finished a lot of the chances.
Prost had 21 goals and 13 assists this past spring to garner the All-State selection.
“Lana and Caliyn work very well together,” Strattman said. “Cailyn will be a senior next year and we will lean on her for that leadership.”
St. Vincent graduated just two seniors.
“The experience that we gained this past season is big and should help us moving forward,” Stratmann said.

The Perryville Pirate girls soccer team didn’t win the district tournament, but that didn’t stop the program from earning some of the state’s top honors.
Three players were named to the Class 2 All-state team when the awards were recently announced.
Senior forward Kyla Schnurbusch was named to the first team, senior midfielder Rachel Riney was second team and senior defender Alyssa King was named honorable mention defender.
The Pirates finished the season 16-4, but fell to St. Pius 1-0 in the district title game.
We had three All-State players and five All-Region players and we didn’t even get out of our district,” Perryville coach Jerry Fulton said. “I think that is a compliment to what other coaches think of our team.”
Schnurbusch led the team with both 27 goals and 16 assists and was a major part of the Pirate offense this past season. Schnurbusch was named to the second team last season.
“She was our leading goal scorer and was huge for us all season,” Fulton said. “We wish Kyla nothing but the best, but she will be a tough player to replace next season.”
The same could be said for the other two selections as well as Riney controlled much of the midfielder action for Perryville this season as she scored nine goals and had 13 assists this spring.
“Rachel did a lot for us in the middle of the field, and set up a lot of the opportunities we had this season,” Fulton said.
King was the primary defender that moved back to help replacing Anna Gremaud, who won the Class 2 Defensive Player of the Year. King also had three goals and six assists this season.
“We asked Alyssa to move back to defense and she did it with no questions,” Fulton said.
The three All-state selections add to the recognitions that the Perryville program has enjoyed over the past several years. Perryville has had 13 All-State selections since 2018.
“All these honors and awards are done by other coaches and it means that they respect us enough to look at us every year, which is good for Perryville.”
Perryville graduated five seniors.
