The old geezer never ceases to be amazed by human behavior. Especially when it involves our political “parties”. Parties, you know, kind of thought they were joyous, convivial gatherings, maybe lubricated with a bit of the juice of the grape, firewater or brewski.
Well, now that you think of it, might help to explain the increasingly wacko series of behaviors of one of our major parties as they blithely frolic through our state and nation in recent days.
Of course, they could be just behaving like pubescent teenagers who, while their parents are away, decide to let it all hang out and party till dawn, long as nobody calls the cops.
On the national level they’re running three trillion-dollar deficits, firing regulators left and right, abducting and shooting people in the streets and starting wars while touting testosterone pills, meme coins and crypto like shills on late night tv. All the while telling us we don’t need to “call the cops” cause, it’s just “those neighbors.” You know, those dark-skinned, Muslim, communist “foreigners” who eat cats, rape girls and wear dresses, or maybe rape cats who wear dresses.
Hey, never can keep that straight. It’s got the old codger quakin’ in his boots.
And right here in good ole’ Missouri they’re even better at staying up all night boozing and partying without adult supervision. You know. Adults. Us. Citizens. Voters.
The codger can see them, their voices squeaking as they cackle conspiratorially, likely giggling like school girls at their genius creativity, as they devise not one, but two amendments to our constitution as “get out of jail cards” for their “late night hi-jinks.”
Hey, gotta keep that party hopping into the early morning hours.
Hey man, they say; those infernal voters, why do they keep trying to tell us what to do? Who the heck do they think they are? It’s like they think we’re some kind of servants, like, you know, public servants! Let’s show ‘em. Let’s amend the constitution so they can’t do that. We can even say we’re doing it to preserve the constitution we’re messing with! Chuckle, snicker, guffah!
And, and, what a topper, snicker, snicker. They’re always demanding ridiculous stuff like better roads, health and childcare; that kind of junk. Why don’t we eliminate the fairest way to pay for that stuff. So, the women, children and poor who really need it and can’t afford it, will have to either pay for it themselves, or just go away and let us party!
The old guy just has to shake his head in sympathy for them. They only want to party like it’s 1999 … or maybe 1984.
Whether nationally or on the banks of the Missouri, they’re chock full of remarkably self-righteous self-aggrandizement. How the heck do “they” have the temerity to tell us we can’t do anything we want.
Do they think Jefferson was actually serious when he stuck in that mumbo-jumbo about all men being created equal? Or, that two-bit poet when she scribbled on the Statue of Liberty that “they” should give us their “tired”, “poor” or “huddled masses yearning to breathe free”. Hey, they’re just freaking immigrants!
As pert little Lesley Gore sang into the microphone that summer of 1963, “It’s my party .... I’ll cry if I want to ....” Take a look around us.
“You would cry too ....” Threats, political prosecutions, shootings, abductions of children, evictions, bombings, home invasions ….. “If it happened to you.”
Maybe as the returning “parents” in the room as we gaze at the havoc around us, we could ask these willful and unruly “kids” to prove they didn’t create this mess, or, worse still, stand by while it’s happening.
“It’s my party.” Cute earworm of a song. Maybe it’ll stick with us till Aug. 4. Maybe Nov. 3?
