Dreyer returns to the bench for PHS boys basketball

Perryville boys basketball will be led by a familiar name next season.
Perryville Athletic Director and Assistant Principal Justin Dreyer will return to the bench this winter in hopes to bring stabilization to the program. Dreyer is replacing Brett Hale who coached one season at the head of Perryville’s bench.
Dreyer was the coach for five seasons beginning in the 2012-2013 school year.
Hale left in May and the job was open for about two months and one coach applied and ultimately turned down the position. Dreyer felt compelled to take the job.

“I have been out of it for six years,” Dreyer said. “I helped out a little this summer, along with our JV coach Jeff Reisenbichler. This program means a lot to me, especially because I was a former coach. I want to help stabilize it and bring it back to where it can be.”
Since the departure of Dreyer at the end of the 2016-2017 season, the Pirates had three coaches in the next six seasons.
“I think we can consistently win 15 games every year,” Dreyer said. “We haven’t had a lot of stability since I left. I knew that we weren’t going to get somebody soon before the school year started. I didn’t want just anybody to get this job.”
Dreyer won double-digit games in four of his five seasons as head coach, and hopes to help the program rebound from several down seasons. The Pirates have not won more than five games in the last four years.
“We are going to be young this year,” Dreyer said. “We’ve had a good summer and the guys have been working hard. I would like to get up and down the court with his team and be able to press and trap to create opportunities. I think we could fit into a system like that.”
