Disaster Action Team launches with Red Cross training

Perry County is taking a proactive step to strengthen local emergency response efforts by hosting its first training session with the American Red Cross to begin forming a local Disaster Action Team.

The training, facilitated through Perry County Emergency Management, was held Saturday, Jan. 10, at the Perry County Joint Justice Center, with 14 individuals participating. The session marked the start of a local partnership focused on building a team of trained volunteers who can respond quickly when disaster strikes — whether from a house fire, severe storm, flooding or other emergencies affecting county residents.

A Disaster Action Team is made up of trained community members who serve as part of the American Red Cross Volunteer Corps, providing immediate assistance following disasters. Once certified, volunteers may serve not only in Perry County but also in other areas where the Red Cross is needed. Teams help address urgent needs such as temporary shelter, emergency supplies and support services for families experiencing a crisis.

“Perry County is committed to ensuring our residents have access to timely, reliable help during emergencies,” said Patrick Naeger, Perry County Emergency Management director. “By working with the American Red Cross to establish a Disaster Action Team, we are investing in a stronger, more prepared community.”

County officials expressed appreciation to the American Red Cross for providing expert instruction and resources to help develop a team capable of serving the community during critical moments.

Perry County officials encouraged residents interested in volunteering to consider joining the Disaster Action Team. Volunteers will receive training and ongoing support through the American Red Cross and will play a vital role in assisting neighbors during times of need.
