The City of Perryville is calling on residents to wear purple and show their support for military families, as Mayor Larry Riney has officially proclaimed Wednesday, April 15, as “Purple Up! Day” in the community.
The proclamation recognizes the sacrifices made not only by members of the Armed Forces, but also by their children, who often share in the challenges of military life.
Sponsored locally by American Legion Auxiliary Post 133, the annual observance is part of a nationwide effort to honor military kids for their strength, resilience and support of their parents’ service.
Auxiliary members helping organize this year’s program include President Carol Taylor, Vice President Nancy Wilfong and Unit Commander Crystal Brown.
In the proclamation, Riney noted the “great admiration and utmost gratitude” held by Perryville residents for service members and their families, emphasizing that their sacrifices help preserve the freedoms enjoyed by all citizens.
The document also highlights the unique role of military children, describing the day as a time to recognize their “commitment, patience, courage and unconditional support” of parents serving in the Armed Forces.
“Wearing purple on April 15 will show support for our military kids and appreciation for their strength and sacrifices,” the proclamation states.
Purple has become the official color of the observance because it represents all branches of the military, combining the colors associated with each service into one unified symbol of support.
The proclamation further acknowledges that military families often endure long separations and frequent moves, requiring children to adapt to new schools, communities and friendships while maintaining resilience and pride in their parents’ service.
Riney formally declared April 15 as Purple Up! Day and encouraged all residents to participate by wearing purple and taking a moment to thank military children for their sacrifices.
“Honoring the service and sacrifice of our military children” is a shared responsibility, the proclamation states, urging the community to come together in recognition of those who serve behind the scenes.
Local organizers hope the observance will not only raise awareness, but also provide a visible show of appreciation for military families in the Perryville area.
Residents are encouraged to participate by wearing purple on April 15 and joining in the nationwide effort to recognize the important role military children play in supporting their families and country.
