Chester Bridge demolition pushed to Sept. 28

Due to unforeseen issues between ames construction and union pacific railroad, the Chester Bridge demolition day has been moved to September 28, 2026.

The Chester Bridge Demolition is scheduled for September 28th at 9 a.m. If you are planning on attending the event, there will be free parking located at Cole Memorial Park, 100 Pool Drive Chester, Illinois and the Cohen Complex, 3402 Bodes Lane Chester, Illinois. There will be shuttles running with drop-off locations on the riverfront. There will be no public parking on the riverfront on September 28. All individuals will need to park at Cole Memorial Park or the Cohen Complex and ride the shuttles to the riverfront.

The new Don Welge Memorial Bridge will remain open to traffic until approximately 8:30 am. All shuttles will leave Cole Memorial Park and the Cohen Complex beginning at 6:00 am and the last shuttle will depart at 8:40 am to ensure all spectators are able to view the event. Shuttles will continue to run individuals back to both parks until noon. All roads leading to the riverfront will be barricaded with no parking. Handicapped accessible shuttles will also be available at Cole Memorial Park. Individuals with mobility concerns may contact Chester City Hall at (618) 826-2326.

Visitor Information:

Shuttles will begin running at 6 a.m. from Cole Memorial Park (100 Pool Drive) and the Cohen Complex (3402 Bodes Lane).

Pets, large or hard-sided coolers, alcohol or glass bottles are not permitted, however you are encouraged to bring a small cooler.

There will be bleachers and picnic tables on the riverfront.

Skateboards, inline skates, skate shoes, scooters and other recreational vehicles are prohibited Drones are prohibited.

The boat ramp on the riverfront will be closed.

Drinks will be available for purchase at the event.

All roads leading to the riverfront will be closed at 6 a.m.

Please note: in the event of an emergency, Chester police department will be using the roadway on water street. Please keep the roadway clear.

The river channel will be closed for 48 hours after the demolition.

We want to make it clear that there will be no public parking on or near the riverfront, all visitors will need to be shuttled from Cole Memorial Park or the Cohen Complex.
