Students convince DESE to honor gifted schoolchildren

The state of Missouri celebrated Gifted Education Awareness Week last week, thanks to students in Phoebe Pohlman’s gifted education classes at Perry County School District 32.

Pohlman and her students used the skills they were developing in gifted education to effectively communicate the reasons why they believed the state should designate a week for the recognition.

The students who participated in advocating for a special week to recognize exceptional students and their unique gifts and challenges are in grades 4-6 at Perryville Elementary and Perry County Middle Schools.

Their presentation to the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) must have been convincing because it resulted in the designation of the second week in February — February 10-14 — to celebrate gifted education, its students, and its educators.
Gifted education extends through high school at District 32, with Karen Krieger serving the middle school (grades 6-8) population.
