Letter to the Editor: MENTAL SICKNESS NEEDS OPERATION HAWKEYE

Posted

To the Editor:
During the beautiful month of May we had, sadly, two “mass shootings.” Don’t blame the guns. Guns don’t kill people. People kill people.
How many more classrooms of murdered children are we going to tolerate? Our democracy mistakenly grants people who are mentally sick too much freedom. Forget the prayers; forget the lamentations.
Our government leaders and judges need to take first-pounding action. It’s time for them to initiate Operation Hawkeye for people with a mental sickness. Force them into treatment. Insist they be physically monitored and shadowed 24/7. Bring back the insane asylums where such people can be committed by force, if necessary. Place them in a controlled, self-contained environment where they can be properly and consistently medicated. Never let them mingle freely in public alone.
We like to delude ourselves and think 21st century humanity is so enlightened. We are basically animals with one foot still planted firmly in the jungle: very recently a Russian beheaded a Ukrainian.
