Letter to the Editor: Correcting a mistake

Posted

TO THE EDITOR:

This election will give Missouri voters an opportunity to correct a mistake that was made in 2018.

The “Clean Missouri” amendment sounded good, but its intent was to remake the redistricting process.

The amendment gave the Missouri state auditor — not the secretary of state, who is the states election authority — the power of appointing a state demographer, who would be charged with drawing legislative districts.

Amendment 3 will actually do what “Clean Missouri” promised. It will return Missouri to a redistricting process similar to the process that served the state very well for years.

It will bring back House and Senate bipartisan citizen commissions charged with drawing respective legislative districts.

The passage of “Clean Missouri” in 2018 was not a grassroots effort driven by Missouri citizens who were concerned with the boundaries of their legislative districts. It was part of a nationwide effort to reform state politics through the redistricting process. It is absolutely critical that we vote yes on Amendment 3.
