John’s Pharmacy, a local and independently owned pharmacy is scheduled to open its newest location in Altenburg Monday, June 27.
The pharmacy is located in the former Altenburg Foods building at 8491 Main St. in Altenburg and will be open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Services will include traditional pharmacy service, a Meds@ONCE prescription sync service, prescription delivery, pharmacy compounding and immunizations. In addition, the pharmacy will also stock a wide variety of over the counter products.
Derek Palisch, an Altenburg native and director of operations for John’s Pharmacy, is proud to help bring pharmacy services to his hometown.
“We have offered delivery service to patients in the Altenburg area for the last few years and we are excited to bring a new level of service and care to this community,” Palisch said.
Palisch answered a few more questions about the opening Tuesday afternoon.
“A couple of our other pharmacy locations are located in small rural communities (Puxico, Gideon, etc.), and we truly enjoy serving those communities and surrounding areas,” Palisch said. “We feel these areas are sometimes overlooked, and we were also looking at a location where we could really focus on customer care, medication synchronization, and medication compounding services. Creating local job opportunities was also appealing for us. The opportunity presented itself, and we feel it will be a win-win for both the community and the customers we serve. We really hope that the community and surrounding areas will take advantage of the services offered, and look forward to becoming part of the community for many years to come.
“To my knowledge, the building has been vacant since Altenburg Foods closed its doors,” Palisch said.

That was in the fall of 2012. The pharmacy will welcome customers five days a week.
“We will be operating as a traditional pharmacy Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” Palisch noted.
Palisch said the pharmacy may look into hosting a larger welcome event later.
“It will be more of a soft opening. We don’t have an “official” grand opening planned at this time, but might consider doing a “community event” in the future. We also plan on participating in the East Perry Community Fair.
In addition to transferring a few long-time members of their Cape Girardeau staff, John’s has hired both new pharmacy technicians and delivery drivers from the Altenburg area. Heather Palisch, PharmD will be the Pharmacy Manager at the John’s Pharmacy Altenburg location with Kara Hoehn, PharmD, of Perryville, as a full time staff pharmacist.
John’s Pharmacy is co-owned by John McMullin, RPh and Abe Funk, PharmD, both of Cape Girardeau.
“John’s Pharmacy is always looking to improve our service and offer new and better pharmacy solutions throughout Southeast Missouri,” Abe Funk said. “We appreciate the warm welcome and support that we’ve received from the people in this community and look forward to serving them for many years to come.”
As a locally owned family of pharmacies, John’s Pharmacy has proudly served southeast Missouri for more than 35 years in both our retail and long term care pharmacies. Starting out as a single pharmacy in Cape Girardeau, the organization’s family of pharmacies has now grown to eight locations, including operations in Poplar Bluff, Charleston, Gideon.
The John’s Pharmacy locations all operate with the same singular goal: “positively impacting people with kindness, excellence and unwavering service.”
