Board hears concerns on improvement plan

The Perry County School District No. 32 Board of Education had a lengthy discussion on the district’s Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP). School board member and district parent Melissa Hahn discussed with the board, several different aspects and terminologies that she found concerning, including restorative discipline/trauma informed strategies, and school branding.
“When some kids come to us they do not have basic needs such as food, water, or shelter,” Superintendent Andy Comstock said. “In order for us to teach them we must first meet those needs. Some kids come from less than ideal homes and have a lot of trauma and circumstances in their life where we must first get to know how to best teach that student. Teachers may check up on them and ask them how they are doing and most may learn a different way. Those are the strategies we are talking about.”
Before the regularly scheduled meeting the board held a work session on different aspects of the district and how each of them fit inside the CSIP. The CSIP is a 34-page plan on how the district plans to improve the schools over the next five years.
“I thought it was one of the best things we have done,” Hahn said. “It was very informative on a lot of different subjects.”
Along that same track, Hahn suggested informing the public through the district channels about the CSIP and what it is designed to do and what it is used for. The board agreed that it was something the district would look into and how to best implement a plan.
“We want to be as transparent as possible,” board president Nancy Voelker said.
The board discussed the change of the job description to include the Missouri 20-hour online substitute training program to the qualifications for Teacher’s Aide. The item was moved to the consent agenda for next month.
The board recognized members of the Perryville girls soccer team for multiple postseason recognitions and honors. The board honored all-conference, district, region and all-state players during the meeting. The board also recognized coach Jerry Fulton and junior Kyla Schnurbusch for earning a spot on the KTJJ Dream Team.
